Kenya is truly becoming the “Tuscany of Tea”.  In the lush region east of the Rift Valley,
tea estates dot the landscape the way vineyards do the hills and valleys of Italy’s most famous wine region.
In many ways, Kenya presents the “perfect storm” of elements required to make exceptional teas.
From the ground up conditions couldn’t be better for growing tea.
The earth is rich, firm and full of minerals.  Rainfall is heavy but when the sun shines it is bright and intense, both elements fostering quality leaf development.
As well, as if by some divine artistry, the tea fields of Kenya are situated at elevations far above the livable habitat of pests that commonly attack tea plants in other producing countries.  Subsequently, pesticides aren’t needed in Kenya – instead, tea bushes are allowed to grow and develop naturally.
The happy result of this conflagration of perhaps the best tea growing conditions on earth is a plethora of fresh, top quality leaf.  In addition to producing consistently superior cups of tea, the ready availability of this superior quality leaf stock has created a culture of tea innovation in the country.
Kenya Lion Sencha is an excellent example of what can happen when Kenya’s brightest tea minds put the climactic conditions and their collective know-how to work.  In recent years growers on Changoi Estate, (the origin of this tea), have begun experimenting with varieties of tea traditionally found in other producing countries.
Now, thanks to their efforts, in the same way that Old World wine varieties are produced in the New World, (think of a French style Merlot being produced in Argentina), traditional leaf grades like this Japanese style Sencha are being produced in Kenya – with tremendous results.   In a word, this Kenyan Sencha is fabulous.
The cup is lively and assertive with grassy tones, hints of light honey and subtle seaweedy notes.  The natural sweetness of the tea makes it an excellent palate cleanser during meals, in particular between seafood courses, or an amazing companion with dark chocolate for dessert.  Kenya Lion Sencha is a fantastic cup you won’t soon forget.

Hot tea brewing method: When preparing by the cup, this tea can be used repeatedly - about 1-2 times. The secret is to use water that is about 80-85°C.
Place 1 teaspoon of leaves in you cup and let the tea steep for about 3-5 minutes and then begin enjoying a cup of enchantment - do not remove the leaves from the cup. Once the water level is low - add more water, and so on and so on - until the flavor of the tea is exhausted. Look at the pattern of the leaves in the brew - they foretell life.

Iced tea-brewing method:  Not recommended.
